Rahat Mubassir
Welfare VP Candidate
Support that listens, action that protects
Why are you standing in the SU Elections?
I am standing for VP Welfare because I am committed to protecting student rights and strengthening wellbeing support across campus. As a law student, I understand how to advocate effectively and ensure students are treated fairly. I have previously served as a Course Representative and currently as VP Education, where I represented students in meetings and supported them through academic cases and concerns. These experiences have given me practical insight into the challenges students face. Now, I want to use this experience to focus more broadly on welfare, ensuring students receive the guidance, protection, and support they deserve.
If elected, what are your three priorities you want to focus on during your time in office?
- If elected, my first priority will be tackling loneliness by organising inclusive activities and initiatives that help students build meaningful connections.
- My second priority will be strengthening support for international students by improving access to guidance, resources, and practical assistance to help them settle and thrive.
- My third priority will be advocating for improved resources, clearer regulations, and better facilities for disabled students and those with additional needs, ensuring accessibility and fairness remain central to welfare support.
What do you see as your biggest strength and biggest weakness and why?
My biggest strength is my advocacy skills and experience in representation. As a law student and current VP Education, I have developed confidence in raising concerns, presenting cases, and standing up for students in formal settings. My biggest weakness, in a constructive way, is that I can be deeply invested in resolving issues. While this means I dedicate significant time and energy to each case, it reflects my commitment to ensuring no student concern is overlooked.
