Meraz Mahfuj

Education VP Candidate

Education that works for every student

Why are you standing in the SU Elections?

I am standing for VP Education because I want to strengthen academic representation and ensure students’ voices shape their learning experience. As a current Postgraduate and Part Time Students Officer, I have actively supported students, gathered feedback during Speak Week, and contributed to democratic meetings within the Students’ Union. These experiences have given me a clear understanding of the academic challenges students face. I have also been involved in one of the largest societies on campus, which has strengthened my engagement with the wider student community. With my corporate management background, I believe I have the skills and commitment needed to deliver meaningful academic change.

If elected, what are your three priorities you want to focus on during your time in office?

  • My first priority will be ensuring fair and consistent access to academic facilities, digital systems, and learning resources for all students.
  • My second priority will be representing students at the highest level meetings, contributing to curriculum development, and ensuring new programmes are inclusive, practical, and shaped by student feedback, particularly from an equality, diversity, and inclusion perspective, including students with additional needs.
  • My third priority will be reviewing academic regulations to ensure they are clear, supportive, and better aligned with the realities students face throughout their studies.

What do you see as your biggest strength and biggest weakness and why?

My biggest strength is my ability to combine student insight with strategic thinking. Through my current role and corporate management background, I understand how to gather feedback, analyse issues, and present solutions confidently in formal settings. My biggest weakness, in a constructive way, is that I can be highly focused on outcomes. While this sometimes means I push myself hard to achieve results, it ensures that student concerns are not left unresolved and that I remain committed to delivering tangible improvements.
