Amy Cooper
Activities VP Candidate
Newport to Pontypridd, football to MSSUSW – no group left behind!
Why are you standing in the SU Elections?
I aim to make significant developments to student life at USW by giving opportunities to individuals, student groups and sports teams to expand, flourish and achieve. Through my experience on the badminton team, and recently as secretary of USW Lacrosse, I felt my student experience and mentality improve dramatically through engaging with sports, societies and activities. I hope to give each group the attention they deserve, whether its through organising society events, live music gigs, BUCS support and matches, or Varsity 2027. From football to aikido, Christian Union to Malaysian Society, Newport to Pontypridd – no student group left behind!
If elected, what are your three priorities you want to focus on during your time in office?
- Firstly, I want to continue the previous VP’s advances providing support for all sports teams. I want to ensure smaller teams and clubs get the same attention as larger teams, giving equal chances to enter leagues/championships, obtain required equipment, and remain active for years to come.
- I want allow those studying in Newport to be involved in university sports, societies and activities, working with Newport-based students to create societies and events.
- Through research and feedback, I would like to provide support and extensive opportunities for commuters and distance-learners to engage with university activities both in-person and online.
What do you see as your biggest strength and biggest weakness and why?
My biggest strength is my unrelenting enthusiasm and passion for seeing students experience the full extent of university life, and it was the driving force to dedicate my final year of study to helping USW Lacrosse’s revival. Through this, I have had the honour of speaking to many societies and sports teams, finding the gaps in the SU’s support, and gaining determination to fill them! My biggest weakness is my inability to dismiss an idea – I always try to find a way to achieve a goal or find a compromise, and it usually results in sending lots of emails!
