Irfan Rahman
SU President Candidate
Keep the momentum alive
Why are you standing in the SU Elections?
I began as a Student Voice Representative, later became Chair of the Student Voice Forum, and now serving as SU President. Throughout, my approach has been consistent: listen carefully, raise concerns clearly, and focus on practical results.
This year, that approach delivered change. The 24/7 Library in Treforest is now in its final stages of returning. Shuttle bus timings were improved. Free period product dispensers are being installed across campuses, with 12,000 period products secured. The International Welcome Programme was reinstated to support new students.
I am standing again to continue this progress and further strengthen academic and campus life.
If elected, what are your three priorities you want to focus on during your time in office?
- Lobby the National Union of Students for a tuition fee freeze, a Wales wide rent cap, and stronger action to tackle the cost-of-living crisis affecting students.
- Reform the SU democratic structure to better represent all campuses, including Newport, Cardiff, Glyntaff, and Sports Park, expand student led events across every site, and continue the Period Dignity campaign.
- Bring back the part time jobs fair, expand volunteering opportunities, and create a more inclusive and engaging SU for all.
What do you see as your biggest strength and biggest weakness and why?
My biggest strength is the experience and knowledge I have built over the past three years within the student support structure. I understand how the system works, who to approach, and how to navigate processes effectively. I have developed strong contacts across the university who are ready to support students when needed, which allows me to act quickly and strategically. My biggest weakness is that I can be a workaholic, sometimes sacrificing work life balance. However, this means I dedicate significant time and energy to ensuring students who invest so much in their education receive the best possible experience.
