Celebrating Black History Month 2024 at the University of South Wales
This October, we come together at the University of South Wales to celebrate Black History Month—a time to honor the rich history, resilience, and achievements of Black communities in the UK and beyond. This year’s theme, “Saluting our Sisters,” is a powerful reminder of the remarkable contributions of Black women, whose courage and commitment have paved the way for social justice and progress across generations.
Why Black History Month Matters
Black History Month is more than a celebration; it’s an essential part of understanding our shared history and recognizing the often-overlooked contributions of Black individuals to British society. From early pioneers who challenged systemic injustices to modern-day leaders pushing boundaries in politics, science, arts, and sports, Black history is British history. Embracing this month helps us remember the struggles overcome, appreciate the victories achieved, and recognize the ongoing work toward equality and representation in all areas of society.
Saluting our Sisters: A Legacy of Strength and Vision
This year’s theme, “Saluting our Sisters,” draws attention to the powerful and transformative role of Black women, past and present. These women, like abolitionist Mary Prince, community leader Olive Morris, and journalist and activist Claudia Jones, broke barriers that paved the way for future generations. Their stories of strength and defiance resonate deeply, reminding us of the impact that courage and conviction can have on society.
Today, we continue to be inspired by Black British women like Baroness Doreen Lawrence, whose activism for racial justice has transformed public awareness and laws, and Afua Hirsch, who uses her platform to engage and educate on race and identity. These women remind us that history is still being written and that each act of resilience and creativity furthers a legacy that transcends time.
Making an Ongoing Impact
Black History Month isn’t just about honoring the past; it’s about building a more inclusive future. The stories of Black communities—stories of struggle, survival, and success—must be told and heard all year round. By fostering diversity, promoting equality, and understanding our shared past, we help create a university environment where every student feels valued and respected.
We invite you to be a part of this journey by joining the Afro-Caribbean Society (ACS) at the University of South Wales. The ACS is a vibrant community that celebrates Afro-Caribbean heritage, offers a supportive network, and connects students with shared experiences and interests. Through the ACS, students gain a sense of belonging, forge lifelong friendships, and contribute to a diverse, inclusive campus culture.
This October, as we celebrate Black History Month, let’s honor those who came before us, support each other today, and work together to create a future where every voice is heard.Celebrating Black History Yesterday Today Tomorrow
