Course Rep Assemblies are changing!

Back in January at the Annual General Meeting, one of the policy proposals brought forward was the formalising of Course Rep Engagement. This policy aimed to ensure Course Reps were engaging with Course Rep Assemblies as part of their role. From this, a wider discussion was had over some of the barriers to Course Rep Assemblies and how these should be changed to allow for more engagement.

On bringing forward the policy to AGM, Liks Robert commented:

"I felt that it was important to bring this in as the attendance rate of course reps in CRA's was low and this meant that many courses did not have any representation. I also believe that issues can be only solved if they are raised in the first place. I am glad that my policy proposal has been accepted and is in effect now. Also, I hope that this will enhance the overall student experience at the University."

Liks is one of this academic year’s Student Voice Representatives for FLSE but will be taking up the post of Chair of SVF starting in July.

The policy passed and the standing orders were changed to reflect the formalisation of course rep engagement and Course Rep Assemblies. This included:

  • 8.1.4      There shall be no fewer than 3 Course Rep Assemblies per campus (Cardiff, Newport, Pontypridd) in an academic year. Each Assembly shall be subdivided into smaller meetings, giving all Course Reps the opportunity to attend at a convenient time.

  • 8.1.5      Notice of Course Rep Assemblies must be made public at least 7 working days before the Assembly.

  • 8.1.6      The quorum for a Course Rep Assembly shall be 25% of all registered Course Reps. on that campus.

You can read more about Course Rep Assemblies, and other rules surrounding the Students’ Union’s governance in the Standing Orders.

What does this mean?

Course Rep Assemblies will look a bit different to how they have been conducted previously, the Academic Affairs Co-ordinator will share emails via Blackboard announcement to all course reps with the new schedule. This is your chance to raise feedback and concerns you have which we can pass on to the University and help shape what we do. This is the first time we will be doing this so it is important that you not only engage with the new process, but provide feedback on whether this works for you.

If you are not receiving communications from the Academic Affairs Co-ordinator in your outlook then please contact: Zufishan.ghani@southwales.ac.uk to ensure that you are enrolled on the blackboard
