If you have received your results and they are not quite what you expected, not all is lost and believe me, I would know.

Today, I want to share my own little adventure of clearing. If you find you find yourself with unexpected results you might feel lost, defeated, or unsure about your future, but let me assure you that it is okay to stumble (and fail) sometimes. In fact, clearing might lead you to a whole new world of unexpected opportunities, just as it did for me!

A few years back, I was studying in Germany, pursuing my dream of becoming a mechanical engineer. While I was finding my studies challenging, everything seemed to be going well. But oh how wrong I was! I catastrophically failed two exams, which instantly meant I would be unable to continue my studies. I was devastated, feeling a mix of shame and defeat. The thought of returning to my home country without fulfilling my dream was overwhelming to say the least. However, little did I know that this was only the start of a very unexpected journey.

In the words of J. R. R. Tolkien: “Go back? No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!”.

Amidst the chaos of emotions, a glimmer of hope came from a friend in the UK. They told me about the option of applying to university through clearing and how it could be my ticket to a second chance. I dared to dream again, hoping that perhaps, a university could offer me the opportunity I desperately needed.

Nervously, I began my clearing journey. At first, I was anxious about the whole process, fearing it might be complicated and confusing. However, the process ended up being straightforward and, above all, the staff at the University of South Wales were extremely supportive. They were understanding and empathic, making me feel reassured throughout. They asked about my aspirations, my interests, and my academic background to ensure it was a good fit for me. In the end, I received the good news – I was accepted into the mechanical engineering program at USW at would be beginning university in September!

Stepping into this fresh chapter of my life, I was both thrilled and nervous. Would I fail again? What if I never made new friends? However, my worries quickly dissolved as I settled into the vibrant community at the university. The faculty and fellow students were warm, welcoming and non-judgemental. I found a support system that embraced my journey and helped me grow as a person and as a student.

I quickly got involved in the Students’ Union as a Student Voice Representative and Course Representative and I could not get enough. I discovered a passion for representing students I did not know I had!

Fast forward three years, and I am thrilled to say that clearing was the best thing that could have happened to me. Not only did I achieve my dream of studying mechanical engineering, but also graduated with first-class honours! The opportunities I found at the University of South Wales were beyond what I could have imagined.

Beyond academic success, I made friendships that will last a lifetime. The memories and connections made during my time at USW are invaluable. Now, I am working at the Students’ Union, helping other students just like me who are going through difficult times and guiding them on their paths to success.

So, if you find yourself facing unexpected obstacles or have experienced a setback, remember that it is all part of life’s unexpected journey. Embrace the idea of clearing and the opportunities it can present. Don’t be afraid to seek second chances; they might lead you to a brighter and more fulfilling future. Trust me, I am living proof that it’s okay to take a detour and that dreams can be rekindled and fulfilled in the most unexpected ways. Believe in yourself, take that leap of faith, and watch your life transform into something beyond your wildest dreams. The journey may be uncertain, but the rewards are unparalleled. Embrace the unknown and let it shape you into the person you are destined to become.
