MORE SU SOCIETIES IN CARDIFF & NEWPORT

THE IDEA

Students wanted to see more societies set up in Cardiff and Newport. Also, they wanted to see more societies that are based in Treforest start branches on Cardiff and Newport campuses.

ACTION

  • It will be included in the Constitution and Handbooks for all Clubs and Societies that they all should consider membership for all students, across all campuses.
  • Societies are student-led and must be set up by students. To set one up, you just need three students to do so. To get started in setting up a new society, there is further information on our Societies webpage.

UPDATE

AUGUST 7TH

  • All new handbooks have been written for the new academic year.

NOVEMBER 11TH

  • The Marketing and Communications Manager has confirmed that 20 Clubs and Societies attended Cardiff Freshers’ Street Fair on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday with some opting to attend on multiple days. The Clubs and Societies included six new or reformed societies for 2019/20 (Burlesque, Enactus, Greek & Cypriot, Music, Student Scouts and Guides, Non-League Football, and Dragon Radio). The majority of societies in attendance were either formed by Cardiff based students or hold regular meetings in Cardiff.
  • 5 Clubs and Societies attended the Newport Freshers’ Street Fair including Snowsports, Cheerleading and Dance, Computing, Netball and Enactus.
  • To find more about any of the mention societies/clubs, please look at the SU Societies/Clubs list.

WHAT YOU SAID

"More societies/clubs in Cardiff."

"More societies, on Cardiff campus - they are all in Treforest making it difficult to get to."

"Have more Cardiff and Newport societies such as sports, media and any other people may want."

"Start a scheme which helps the societies established in Treforest to help set up societies of same/similar nature on Cardiff and Newport campuses - opportunities to meet up and establish interests and committees on other campuses."

HOW IT WORKS

1. Students submit ideas during Change Week.

2. Teams of students gather to hack solutions to the biggest problems.

3. Teams pitch their ideas to a panel of University big wigs.

4. SU Officers and teams work with staff to make the ideas a reality.
