SU PRESENCE IN CARDIFF & NEWPORT

THE IDEA

Students wanted more from their SU spaces in Cardiff and Newport (Cardiff wanted better signage, and Newport wanted their own space to meet socially).

ACTION

  • SU President and Welfare Officer are working with Estates to increase signage in Atrium leading to Cardiff SU space, in the main building and the stairwell up to the Zen Bar.
  • SU Welfare is pursuing one of this year's Student Voice Representative Projects (Charys Bestley, SVR for Production and Performance 18/19) which outlined how to make the Atrium SU space more inviting.
  • SU President is working to secure a common room space for Newport students.

UPDATE

APRIL 3RD

  • The Welfare Officer (who was part of the team of students) and the Student Voice Team met with Estates to do a tour of the SU space in Cardiff. Estates confirmed that the SU could put signage up on the glass doors leading to the SU, the glass window in the Zen Bar and on the staircase. Estates also confirmed that extra signage was needed on the ground floor of the University for the SU. The SU President and the Welfare Officer are currently writing a business case for funding for this extra signage.

SEPTEMBER 12TH

  • The University has decided to move the Students' Union office in Newport. We have been relocated to B Floor, next to The Advice Zone. The new SU pod includes a more open office space for staff to work in, a welfare room, and a new shop, which are more visible.

SEPTEMBER 26TH

  • The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), the Head of Estates and the Education and Representation Coordinator discussed the Newport social study space to ensure that this problem was looked into.

OCTOBER 16TH

  • The SU President and the Marketing Communications Manager met with a company to discuss signage for Cardiff campus. The company will send the SU mock-ups of the designs.

OCTOBER 21ST

  • The Student Voice Team, the CEO of the SU and the Head of Estates met to discuss the Newport common room. The Head of Estates agreed to locate a temporary room for this academic year since timetabling as allocated teaching rooms for the year. If the trial goes well, it is the hope we can have a room allocated next academic year.

NOVEMBER 12TH

  • The Student Voice Team has contacted the Head of Estates to find out if they have managed to locate a temporary room in Newport yet.
  • A Student Voice Representative (Sarah Morgan, SVR for Education 19/20) for this year is going to write their SVR research project on the student experience in Newport campus, which may have some recommendations/findings to help improve the SU presence on Newport campus.

NOVEMBER 25TH

  • The Head of Estates contacted the Student Voice Team to say they will be in touch soon about the temporary room in Newport.

WHAT YOU SAID

"The SU in Cardiff isn't very present around campus (I didn't even know the Zen Bar existed until today)."

"Common room space in Newport is so desperately needed."

"Better SU spaces around Cardiff and Newport i.e. common rooms, etc."

"Improve the Zen Bar."

"We need a separate place from the library to do group work in Newport."

HOW IT WORKS

1. Students submit ideas during Change Week.

2. Teams of students gather to hack solutions to the biggest problems.

3. Teams pitch their ideas to a panel of University big wigs.

4. SU Officers and teams work with staff to make the ideas a reality.
