SOFTWARE AVAILABILITY

THE IDEA

Students wanted more software available across more of the computers in the university.

ACTION

  • Software accessibility was a Student Voice Representative research project (Khalid Ali, SVR for Computing and Maths 18/19), which will be taken forward between IT and the Student Voice Team.

UPDATE

SEPTEMBER 6TH

  • The Student Voice Team is waiting to meet with IT to discuss issues raised during Change Week and the aforementioned SVR project.

SEPTEMBER 11TH

  • The Student Voice Team and the Education Officer met with IT to discuss the feedback. IT have developed an app which will allow students to use necessary software from any computers. The app, called UniApps, will be piloted this year with a select few software.

NOVEMBER 13TH

  • An issue with using Solid Works from UniApps was raised at the Engineering Course Rep Assembly. The Welfare Officer and Activities Officer will raise this with the UniApps working group.

NOVEMBER 13TH

  • Students asked if Adobe could be included in UniApps at the Applied Sciences Course Rep Assembly. The Welfare Officer and Activities Officer will raise this with the UniApps working group.

WHAT YOU SAID

"More free IT software for students."

"Have Google Earth and Erdas Imagine software in more computer labs."

"Resolve issues with software not working correctly on the computers."

HOW IT WORKS

1. Students submit ideas during Change Week.

2. Teams of students gather to hack solutions to the biggest problems.

3. Teams pitch their ideas to a panel of University big wigs.

4. SU Officers and teams work with staff to make the ideas a reality.
