LGBT+ ENGAGEMENT

THE IDEA

Students wanted to see the institution have a focus on LGBT+ issues.

ACTION

  • There is currently no LGBT+ Officers on the SU Student Council, as no students stood for the positions in the SU Elections. If anyone is interested in these positions, please contact the SU.
  • The Welfare Officer will be organising events for Transgender Day of Remembrance.

UPDATE

NOVEMBER 5TH

  • Transgender Day of Remembrance was on Wednesday 20th November and, in collaboration with our LGBT society, we ran events across Pontypridd, Cardiff, and Newport to honour those whose lives had been lost to transphobic violence and suicide. We had coffee and reflection mornings in Cardiff and Treforest SU, and pledge signing in Newport. Students’ pledges were posted on our social media channels and received positive engagement from both students and staff. We are looking forward to working with the USW Equality and Diversity team to plan LGBT history month in February.

NOVEMBER 25TH

  • The Course Representative for Media, Culture and Journalism stated, in the Production and Performance Course Rep Assembly, that the red box for free sanitary products in the SU in Cardiff is right down the corridor by the female toilets are and asked if this could be moved closer. The Welfare Officer has moved it closer but has reflected that there is nothing else down the corridor but the female toilets so will be looking into providing a small re box within the gender-neutral toilets itself/

WHAT YOU SAID

"More LGBT+ focus and engagement."

HOW IT WORKS

1. Students submit ideas during Change Week.

2. Teams of students gather to hack solutions to the biggest problems.

3. Teams pitch their ideas to a panel of University big wigs.

4. SU Officers and teams work with staff to make the ideas a reality.
