24/7 LIBRARY IN CARDIFF & NEWPORT

THE IDEA

Students wanted the libraries in Cardiff and Newport to be open 24/7.

ACTION

  • Education Officer to raise this feedback at a Campus, SU and Student Services Meeting.

UPDATE

SEPTEMBER 6TH

  • The SU Officers spoke to the Collections Manager of Library Services, who said the Advice Zone in Newport will now have longer staffed opening hours. However, there is no provision to allow Cardiff library to open for longer. This is due to the library being within the building, unlike the library in Treforest, which is its own building. To open the libraries in Cardiff and Newport 24/7 would mean the whole building would have to be open, which entails more security staff needed, extra resources, funding, and insurance.

The new Newport hours are:

  • Mon to Fri 7am - 9pm (self-service 8-9pm)
  • Sat to Sun 9am - 5pm (self-service only)

 The current Cardiff hours are:

  • Mon to Fri 8.30am - 8.30pm
  • Sat to Sun 10am - 6pm

WHAT YOU SAID

"24hr library in Newport."

"Library opening hours should be later maybe 1 or 2 days a week."

"24/7 library hours like Tref."

"Library open longer in holidays."

HOW IT WORKS

1. Students submit ideas during Change Week.

2. Teams of students gather to hack solutions to the biggest problems.

3. Teams pitch their ideas to a panel of University big wigs.

4. SU Officers and teams work with staff to make the ideas a reality.
