The Students’ Union is pleased to announce the launch of microwave stations on campus!
Following a strong response to SU Change Week on this topic in February, the Students’ Union Full-time Officers have been working closely with the University Estates department to secure microwave stations on campus.
Lack of self-catering options was one of the big four reoccurring themes during Change Week this year, with a team of student volunteers being assigned the topic. The team had 12 hours to troubleshoot solutions and come up with a plan to pitch to a panel of university big wigs. The response from the panel was overwhelmingly positive and work began in earnest to implement the ideas presented.
Shannon Lee, Vice President Welfare said:
“I took part in Change Week when I was in my final year. It was fantastic to see students’ ideas being put at the forefront of University planning and to see those ideas come to fruition now is brilliant.”
Mish Wick, SU President said:
“As graduates, we have seen and experienced first-hand the struggles students face when it comes to eating on campus. Not all students can afford food on campus, and some simply don’t have the time to wait, so we understood that getting microwaves would help massively to improve your student experience and save some pennies.”
So far, Microwaves have been installed in Newport Campus (Food Court, B Floor), and Treforest (J block) which will be active by 11 November. The Students’ Union has also secured access to microwaves that are already in place in staff kitchens in Cardiff (CAA105A and CAA401A). We’re also working on installing microwaves on Glyntaff campus and hope that these will be in place soon.
The Students' Union would like to thank the University Estates department which has been crucial in delivering this project.
In order to ensure the microwaves remain a permanent facility, we kindly ask that all users adhere to the usage rules and guidance displayed. If you notice any faults or concerns with a microwave, please contact the Estates Helpdesk or 01443 48222.
