This year, as part of my manifesto promise to increase student volunteering opportunities, the Students’ Union introduced a new campaign called Charity Week; a weeklong campaign dedicated to raising as much money as possible for charity.
Whilst the main objective of the week was to raise money for the Students’ Union’s three fantastic causes (more about this later), we also wanted to make sure students had the chance to get involved – in whatever way possible, whether that was through volunteering, taking part in our competitions or by buying a pint of Erdinger (40p of every pint was kindly donated to our charities – every little helps!) Needless to say, your involvement didn’t disappoint, which made me very proud to be an Exec Officer at this amazingly diverse University.
To make sure everyone had a chance at taking part in Charity Week, we visited every campus with our fundraising activities. No easy feat! If you were in Cardiff or Newport, you might have been lucky enough to take part in our Paper Plane competition, if you were in Glyntaff or Treforest it might have been all about guessing how many sweets were in the jar. That’s the most invigorating thing about running a campaign, often your resources are stretched thin but ultimately it’s about making the most of what you’ve got.
In the run up to Charity Week, we were very lucky to receive overwhelming support from local and national businesses –so a massive shout out to Nando’s, Cineworld, FED, Mission Burrito, Showcase Cinema, Zizzi, Otley Arms and all the individual contributions that made it possible for us to reward your generous donations with fantastic prizes! We were also very lucky to receive the support of DAPS Anthropology society, who took part in fundraising alongside us by hosting a variety of creative taster sessions, thanks DAPS.
Most importantly though, whether you took part as a volunteer, a fundraiser, a raffle ticket holder, or a drinker (40p from Erdinger pints, who could resist?!) your generous support has made sure the Students’ Union’s three annual charities can continue their important work – Four Paws Animal Rescue, (yes, that’s right, the same Four Paws that support our Mental Health Wellbeing campaign), Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Together you donated an incredible £330.12! Help yourself to some good karma - you did good, USW.
Finally, if throwing yourself into a campaign of crazy-busy activities excites the hell out of you, then please drop an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. We’re always on the lookout for our next group of fundraisers to help populate a Fundraising Society.
Hope to hear from you soon!
