Last week, we held our third successful USWSU AGM. I’m so proud of every student that came forward to share their ideas and every student that attended and made their voice heard.
For me, the best thing about AGM is getting to see everyone take an active role in debating issues that affect them. Tough questions were asked of the proposers from the floor, all were met with healthy debate and a democratic vote. It was great to see so many students keen to express their opinions, offer amendments and most importantly influence their University experience.
One proposal, in particular, received quite a lot of attention. First Aid Training for Society Committee members proposed by Duncan Bell, LGBT+ Society President, called for optional First Aid training to be offered to committee members with a view to improving the safety of all society members. A strong vote for this motion illustrates students’ commitment to supporting those who are vulnerable or injured. I am so proud of Duncan for bringing this proposal forward and for delivering it in such a passionate way.
With all six student-led motions successfully passing (you can read the motions in full here), I can begin working with the proposers, fellow officers, SU staff and University staff to improve: Library access, side-gate access, first aid provisions, accessibility to Treforest and Glyntaff, Wednesday timetabling, and society funding provision.
I’m really excited to get stuck in! You can keep up to date with how the work is progressing, and everything else us officers are doing by following the Union’s social pages or our personal Officer Facebook accounts.
Finally, you can still get involved in creating change, we have Student Council meetings throughout the year so get in touch if you want to submit an idea/proposal.
