3 Red Hot Societies

Thursday 23-01-2020 - 18:40

Joining a society is one of the best things you can do whilst in University. It’s a great way to meet new people, have some fun and even help improve your future career prospects!
The Students’ Union supports over 50 student-led Clubs and Societies, which you can join at any time! Here’s our list of the three hottest societies this term.

USW Coyotes - Cheerleading & Dance
USW Coyotes recently won first place in the BCA Spring Spirit, one of their biggest competitions of the year! With the ICC University Nationals coming up in March, this is a busy time for the Coyotes….
We spoke to Ayesha, the President of the Cheerleading & Dance Society (USW Coyotes) to find out a bit more about why she loves being a part of the society.
“If you have never danced before but have always wanted to give it a go, USW Coyotes is the perfect place to start! At first, joining can be daunting, but soon you will meet the most amazing teams, become more social and gain confidence. Cheerleading can be highly demanding, but it allows you to exercise without needing a workout in the gym.”
The Coyotes practice every Thursday or Friday evening depending on which team/teams you’re on and cheer practice is every Saturday morning and Monday nights, so it doesn't get in the way of lectures. The socials we hold are either in Treforest or Cardiff so they are accessible for everyone and we welcome non coyotes members to join in socials as well.
“The team are one of our most welcoming and accepting of everyone and of all abilities, joining is a great way to let off stress, make new friends and gain a family away from home. Cheerleading has helped me so much to gain confidence, from being more sociable with others to feeling secure with my body image.”
If winning competitions wasn’t enough, Cheerleading & Dance have been spreading team spirit by supporting USW Lacrosse at their games, performing chants along the sideline and cheering them on to achieve their best season so far!

Salsa 4 Water
Salsa 4 Water is run by students that share a passion for dancing and fundraising. You can expect to learn a variety of dance styles like Cuban Salsa, LA Salsa, Bachata and more whilst raising money for WaterAid.
WaterAid is an international non-governmental organisation that focuses on ensuring villages across the world have access to hygienic water. This year, the donations are supporting access to water and sanitation in Madagascar.
“Salsa dancing is a great way to increase confidence, keep fit and reduce stress, whilst having fun in what is a safe and relaxing environment! We regularly attend salsa clubs in Cardiff as a society and so it’s a great way to meet people outside of USW too!” - Jack Steele, President of the Salsa 4 Water society.
Your first society session is free and it only costs £2 per session after this. Sessions last for up to 3 hours and are a great way of relieving stress!
The Salsa 4 Water society is a great example of students impacting communities worldwide – managing to raise a whopping £650 for Wateraid last year. We can’t wait to see what they do next!

LGBT Society
University can be a tricky time for anyone, but being able to find a community of LGBTQ+ people to hang out with, have a party, or get support from is essential. The LGBT+ Society is a safe place for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities to come together in a social manner, with no fear of judgement. Through the years, the LGBT+ society has allowed many members to build their confidence, as they provide a safe space for students to talk about their sexuality, gender, or other issues that they have had through their time at university. When asked what the LGBT society meant for Kay, the President of the society, they said “For me, it means community, and coming together!”
With LGBT History month just around the corner, the society has a whole month of exciting things planned alongside the Students’ Union. There will be a “Wear Your Colours” themed score, a quiz night to test your general LGBTQ+ themed knowledge, an LGBT+ open mic night and lots more!
This is a very important time for the society as they participate in a month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. To get involved in LGBT History Month events or any LGBT Society activities contact Kay on uswlgbtsoc@gmail.com
