Varsity 2023

A sunny start to the morning saw six teams (with USW Coyotes and our supporters in tow to cheer them on), venture across the Severn Bridge to University of West England. The atmosphere was building ahead of our first varisity against UWE and with six different sports, it was all to play for.

First up, a trip to Lockleaze Sports Centre for USW Men's Football. The Coyotes cheered them on to the pitch whilst their fellow USW teams watched from above. According to Jade (via unisouthwales instagram stories) our goalie was on fire and we don't doubt it. A thrilling game, with a score of 3-3 at the whistle, saw UWE take the win with the penalties.

The action moved just over two miles down the road to the Centre For Sport - where our badminton, hockey, netball and volleyball teams were getting ready to take on their UWE counterparts.

After several exciting games, UWE Badminton took the win but all participants offered a thrilling watch. With music playing and loud cheers emerging, the crowds were growing.

Just outside, USW Hockey Men took on UWE in a tough fixture which saw the final result of 10-1 to UWE.

The clouds were forming and it was almost certain that the day would be dampened by an almost definite downpour. Back indoors, spirits were high as USW rugby and badminton teams took their place on the side of the netball court ready to cheer on our team.

There was incredible support from both teams as USW put in a strong effort against UWE. An exciting four quarters where USW showed their determination and kept our spectators entertained but unfortunately it wasn't enough to take the win with the final score being 61-36 to UWE.

On the court next door, Volleyball Women just missed out on the win with their final score being 3-2.

With USW action over at the Centre for Sports - the teams and spectators made their way back over to Lockleaze. The rain was pouring and with some unconventional transport methods from some USW representatives spirits were still high.

USW Rugby were warming up, braving the weather whilst the support stayed warm in the bar.

A close game of rugby (with very vocal support from both sides) saw a final score of 22-15 to UWE.

Whilst we didn't win the trophy this year, it was an action-packed day which offered great viewing for all spectators. We're extremely proud of all of our teams that took part and thankful to those of you that made the journey over to support USW.

A special thank you to Jamal Abdilahi (our president and VP Activities) for getting varsity back to USW and congratulations to UWE on their well deserved victory.

We're looking forward to seeing how varsity develops over the next few years and can't wait to welcome UWE to USW when we host!

All images that we managed to take have been uploaded to our Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/uswsu). Please note that there is not photos of everyone and some events may have more photos than others due to where our team were within the day.
